Whenever heavy snowfall and icy conditions disrupt transport services, there is one question which can be guaranteed to be asked by the media - why can’t the UK be more like the Scandinavian countries which cope so well with heavy snowfall.
The simple answer is that the Scandinavians know that they are going to get heavy snow more or less the same time every year and are prepared to invest heavily in resources to deal with it.
In this country, heavy snowfall happens so rarely that it would be profligate to invest heavily in expensive machinery and equipment which is idle for 50 weeks of the year. It also happens at such irregular times that we are unprepared for it.
Simples.
