The people of Glasgow, Edinburgh and everywhere in between are to be asked if they want twice the services between Scotland’s two greatest cities and for them to be faster.
It’s a £1bn project and, unlike the HS2 line from London to Birmingham and beyond, makes use of existing lines, rather than ploughing through virgin countryside.
The new golden age of rail, as highlighted by Network Rail’s Rick Haythornthwaite amongst others, needs such projects if it is to continue to grow as the transport sector in the UK.
Reducing travel times between Glasgow and Edinburgh to less than a lunch break door to door makes excellent sense.
