Campaigners for the Derry railway line upgrade are demanding that the work is brought forwards to be completed in time for 2013.
This deadline means transport will be available for Derry’s year as City of Culture in 2012. It is understandable that residents and councillor’s want everything to be perfect for their chance in the spotlight, especially considering how important a part transport can play in this.
Yet even if the funding, £75m, which they seem to believe can be spirited from nowhere, was secured immediately, work will not be completed in time. This indicates that although their dream may be considered reasonable, it is ultimately unrealistic.
If work cannot be finished for 2013, and the people of Derry are definitely set up for disappointment, the extra few years it will take for the delayed upgrade to be completed do not seem as long to wait.
