‘Integrated’ travel seems to be a buzzword this week, with huge projects envisioning the combination of rail and air travel, and train operating companies increasing motivation and access to cycling to stations.
By incorporating and streamlining different modes of transport, these industries can simplify the journey for passengers, as well as promoting sustainability, environmental awareness and financial returns.
It also allows a more collaborative approach, whereby the rail industry could work with aviation, and cyclists, as opposed to in competition with them.
While Lord Foster’s grand plans may face criticism on a number of fronts, there is no denying that the scope of his vision is inspiring. To live in a country where travel is so smooth and combined that it is considered one whole industry, rather than fragments of difference is something to aspire to.
Of course integration is difficult; aligning such different perspectives and goals would be incredibly challenging. But the increasing use of cycling alongside rail shows the beginnings of what we could achieve.
