I wish I were surprised with the way in which the RMT has jumped on the Scottish derailment story.
Although I will concede that they are correct in saying that the conductor played a crucial role in getting passengers off the derailed train, I would not agree that the conductor averted a ‘disaster’- this was far more down to the train driver.
Given that this accident was caused by a landslide, if the RMT’s main concern was the safety of passengers, should they not have begun a campaign for better embankment maintenance, rather than focussing on an area which has much more to do with maintaining their membership’s rail jobs?
