It is indeed wise of Network Rail to close crossings, but in some cases they do so without adequate replacement.
Outside our window there was a crossing to a ferry, demonstrably in use from about 1283, yet this was closed without public consultation; it was alleged there was no public right of way. Yet the gateposts are still there. A footbridge is perfectly possible.
There is no alternative crossing within half a mile, so it is a mile's walk to go to the beach outside our house. The steps down to the beach stand idle and the summer river ferry cannot call; the next calling point is about a mile away.
