After much criticism of plans to cut or reduce sleeper services, funding has been provided to ensure their survival.
Following a petition, and the ongoing Transport Scotland consultation, the Scottish Government has matched the UK Government’s investment of £50m, meaning that sleeper trains to and from the Highlands will continue.
As an environmentally friendly alternative to flying, this service could help reduce emissions as well as improving the connectivity of the UK, allowing the rail network to be updated.
Many argued that plans to cut or reduce the services would exacerbate the problem of overcrowding, but Transport Scotland suggested it would save money from an under-used service.
The results of the consultation will be published in February, but it seems that this pledge will ensure the Scottish travellers can continue to sleep soundly.
