This line from an Echo and The Bunnymen song must be ringing in George Osborne’s ears at the moment.
All departments are anticipating having to say goodbye to large parts of their budgets and transport is likely to be hit badly.
This means that fares will have to go up, which is bad for publicity and will only serve to alienate many passengers who are already dissatisfied with rail services as they are.
However, until train operating companies have the capacity
to invest more in services, it will be the public who continues to pick up the tab for any spending cuts at the Department
for Transport.
