News that a high speed rail link is being considered for Scotland demonstrates again how valuable this project will be if it goes ahead. Different areas of the country have suggested different routes or extensions of the line to be included in the benefits HS2 could bring.
However, the Scottish Government would only instigate such a major project if they could obtain a guarantee from England that the gap between Birmingham and Scotland would be connected.
Given the trouble that has already been caused over the first phase of HS2, the link from London to Birmingham, is a Scottish connection something that politicians on this side of the border could commit to?
With projects this extensive, it is wise to think big and aim high. But if this is to become reality, difficult negotiations and campaigning lie ahead.
