This morning I have been reading about the British Transport Police’s efforts to stop children playing on the railway.
Whilst I have a lot of respect for the BTP and the work they do, I still think that their efforts have been slightly misguided. Their idea is to show children what happens when a train crashes, due to kids playing on the track.
Judging from the faces of the kids on the promotional material the BTP sent me – it looks like they have failed – the kids are enjoying themselves – to them it is simply a spectacle.
They do not have the capacity to understand the true horror of a train crash or the agony when a child is hit by a train. They just see it as ‘a bit of fun’.
I’m afraid that it should be the parents who are responsible for making their children understand about the dangers. They are the only ones who know their children well enough to make them emphathise.
