It is ludicrous that train drivers think they are right to go on strike after receiving a pay offer of ‘only’ 12% over two years.
That figure is so much higher than virtually any of their hard-pressed passengers can expect – including thousands of rugby fans who will have to deal with the disruption on the day of the Wales match against England.
Unions have rights to take such action, of course, and past walk-outs have been called for good reasons after unreasonable impositions by profit-hungry management. But this Arriva Trains Wales strike by RMT members is not like that. This action will further alienate the travelling public and further damage the reputation of the whole rail industry.
