Given that most people I know widely accept that Britain is - for want of a better phrase - broke, I was surprised to hear Philip Hammond offering compensation to businesses and homeowners along the route of the proposed High Speed Railway line.
Now, to be honest, I had assumed that because the government is currently slashing spending wherever it can, that the whole idea was going to quietly forgotten. But no, it seems that the coalition actually meant it when they
promised us that line.
This is probably one of the greatest pieces of news for rail jobs that I have reported in a while. The building of a high speed rail network – scratch that – just the design process
of building a high speed rail network would keep many
people in jobs in rail for many years.
And then, we might eventually get one built!
