Passengers attempting to travel on the railway without a ticket cost the industry millions, which could be better spent on improvements to stations and trains.
It is also highly unfair that some should pay while others consider tickets as optional, rather than compulsory. They are not above the rules which apply to everyone else, and should be apprehended for this behaviour.
However, there are instances where passengers who have bought tickets are punished for confusion relating to which stations they are eligible for travelling to. In certain areas, the price of an extra portion of a journey is included in the total ticket price, but only if specifically requested by the purchaser.
They may then be charged the £20 penalty fine for not having the correct ticket, even though this would cost no more than the ticket they actually bought.
Instances like this must be stopped, as only those who intentionally flout rules deserve punishment.
