The rail industry needs more projects like Track and Train if it seeks to attract more young people into the profession.
With youth unemployment so high, it is the perfect time to offer work experience placements and internships to recruit the bright young minds of the next generation.
The cross-industry approach is also a great idea, as this will offer the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities and work within the rail industry, and providing an interesting, varied set of placements.
However beneficial this new scheme will be, helping up to 100 graduates is only a drop in the ocean. With both the huge numbers of recent graduates struggling to find work, and the industry desperately trying to gain employees to continue the necessary work on the railways, more needs to be done.
This scheme should be viewed as inspiration for other providers, operators and rail companies to either start their own internship project, or join together with others to provide a multi-dimensional experience for the students.
