Given the poor state of public finances I am fully aware that
it is unlikely that the government will retain control of the East Coast.
However I was shocked to hear was that the government has not even bothered to investigate whether retaining control of the East Coast Mainline was a viable option.
Surely some investigation into the economic viability of the franchise might have shone a light on why the previous franchisees had encountered so many problems at the very least?
Does this mean that the government is simply waiting for the next franchisee to make all of those mistakes again?
Given that the government faces either losing or having to share power after the next election, perhaps they simply do not care anymore.
