There is a tendency in our society, to recognise negative events or setbacks more readily than the positive. We are far quicker to criticise than we are to celebrate, and there is always something we can find fault with, that can be improved or done differently.
But it is not in human nature to be perfect, and some of the projects that we take on, especially in rail, are so challenging and complex, that it is inevitable that things will not always go exactly to plan all the time.
Even when they do, when they exceed our expectations or are delivered ahead of schedule, or under budget, we are so used to focusing on the negatives that we do not appreciate the great industry that we have in the UK.
Of course there are improvements to be made, but we should remember to acknowledge the good along with the bad to ensure a more realistic picture of our progress.
