So the government has finally given in to the train operating companies demands with the announcement of the consultation on lengthening their franchise agreements.
Whether this will be good news for rail jobs is yet to be
seen, however I doubt that anything the government says from now until the election means little anyway.
What does mean something and worries me a little is the RMT’s victory in its campaign to have at least one guard on East Coast Mainline services.
Whilst in the short term this looks like a good thing for rail
jobs, one must wonder if it is a sustainable practice.
I am all for the protection of rail job workers’ rights and for
the creation of rail jobs. But there is no point in creating a
rail job, if it is not sustainable.
