Why, when Network Rail is having to make sweeping efficiency savings, can the government suddenly afford to keep hold of the East Coast Mainline?
Where is this money coming from?
A cynic could also ask the same question about the government’s high speed rail plans?
Good for rail jobs? Yes. Likely to happen any time soon? No.
Are the government’s plans a cheap way to muster extra votes at the next election? Probably.
It is time for government to stop playing politics with rail and give it more funding, which in turn will provide two things: one, better rail infrastructure, which will then attract
business and investment to a country in desperate need of
it, and two: create more rail jobs, which then produce tax
and consumer spending, which is also sorely needed.
You see… it’s easy.
