There have been some fairly vicious comments being made ever since the publication of the report, put together by the Tax Payer’s Alliance and the Driver’s Alliance, which questions the amount of public money spent on roads and on rail.
Now I am not going to repeat the arguments made so far that rail is greener and more cars means more congestion… as if anybody (especially around the M25) would notice?!
But what I will say is that the money which is put into roads is essentially dead the moment it hits the tarmac, but with rail that money goes on to create more rail jobs, which means more tax revenues, which means a stronger economy for all of us.
Every area of public spending must come under scrutiny in these uncertain economic times, but I think that the expansion of rail and the rail jobs it creates, can only be a good thing for Britain
