Labour must be rubbing their hands with delight after a Conservative minister admitted that Crossrail would be, like every other publicly funded project, under review if they were to come to power.
As I have said before it is all very well speaking about the 1000’s of rail jobs which the project could create, but those jobs in rail are only worth having if they are sustainable.
People need to wake up to the fact that public money will
only go so far and that continuously borrowing money to
fund public rail projects is not sustainable. What is needed is more private sector investment in rail, along with cutting out all of the waste from existing public projects.
If that means cutting rail jobs in the short term to create far more in the long term, then that is a pain we must endure.
