So the director of the RAC Foundation, Professor Stephen Glaister (pictured), doesn’t like the idea of the government spending billions of pounds on a high speed rail line. This is hardly surprising, is it?
However, I do take on board his point that any rail infrastructure projects which the government spends
billions of pounds of public money on, should be for the benefit of the public.
One of the main drivers in having a high speed rail network
is to increase rail usage, along with decreasing our environmental impact by reducing car usage.
Therefore the government must ensure that fares are not prohibitively high, to enable normal people to get the most
use of a high speed rail network.
Whether that actually happens is debatable.
