I am tired of hearing endless announcements from the government concerning their plans to improve the rail network- the latest being Lord Adonis’ pledge to build a fast connection between York and London.
The reason for my lack of patience is that these announcements are not worth the paper they are printed on.
Why is it only now that the government seems to want to
take the issue seriously? It may have something to do with the fact that there’s an election on the horizon.
But how is the government going to pay for big rail projects like high speed rail and electrification? By putting up our taxes.
But considering that taxes will have to go up because of the budget deficit, do you really think any politician will have to appetite to put them up again to fund rail projects?
Probably not.
